Cathodic Protection

The best choice for preventing metal corrosion is a Cathodic Protection System. A Cathodic Protection system controls metal deterioration using direct current electricity, which reduces corrosion.

Corrosion is likely to occur when the steel components of a UST system are in unprotected contact with the soil. Once that corrosion occurs, it is only a matter of time until the metal deteriorates – ultimately leading to fuel leaking from your system. Some of the largest leaks at UST sites have been directly caused by corrosion.

The most effective way to protect your UST site against metal deterioration is through a comprehensive cathodic protection system. At EPS, we provide the appropriate protection specific to your site needs.

Your Cathodic Protection system includes steel USTs, piping, swing joints and flex connectors, which utilize direct current electricity to reduce corrosive action. This system effectively controls metal deterioration by making the included metal parts of the system the cathode of an electrochemical cell.
When an impressed-current system is employed, the system must be inspected to verify proper operation. Test and inspection records must be continually maintained.

Federal regulations require that a qualified corrosion expert designs the cathodic protection system that is installed at a UST site.

Our Cathodic Protection Services includes:

  • Train the owner and operators on system operation and ongoing regulatory requirements.
  • Train the owner and operators on system operation and ongoing regulatory requirements.
  • Perform regular maintenance, including periodic testing and necessary adjustments.
  • Generate requisite Corrosion Control Reports.

Sump Treatment & Prevention

Our Sump Treatment and Prevention programs help site owners to prevent environmental contamination and costly component replacement by reconditioning and repairing sumps affected by corrosion.

In an extensive 2013 EPA study on sump corrosion, the occurrence of corrosion on fueling components in sumps has increased and accelerated due to the presence of higher ethanol blends in gasoline.

Our Sump Treatment and Prevention programs help site owners to prevent environmental contamination and costly component replacement by reconditioning and repairing sumps affected by corrosion. Each Sump Treatment is performed by a highly trained EPS service technician and is safe, affordable and minimizes forecourt downtime.

The Sump Treatment process begins with a full inspection and documentation of the condition of metal components in each sump, followed by a thorough cleaning, which eliminates corrosion of all sump components.
Each metal component in the sump is then wrapped with a bonded synthetic fabric, saturated with a blend of microcrystalline wax, solvents and corrosion inhibitors that is chemical, corrosion and abrasion resistant, leaving each sump clear of corrosion as well as fully resistant to further metal loss which could result in equipment failure, product loss, and contamination of the environment.

Corrosion Protection Services

Bare steel tanks, pipes and metal fittings in the ground will ultimately corrode, and left unattended, rust will develop, and holes will form. All of this leads to fuel leaking into the environment.
